The Meadery

Conversion of a former Odd Fellows Hall in a World Heritage Site. With previous uses including: a cinema, theatre and restaurant - The Meadery has undergone extensive change throughout its life. We were brought on-board to create the next chapter for this building.

Our client wished to change the use of the building. Turning from commercial use into residential (whilst retaining a smaller amount of commercial space, continuing to activate the street), we proposed two dwellings on the site located completely within the existing built form.

Though not listed, the building sits within a conservation area, and a World Heritage Site. Our design response required careful consideration of these designations to ensure support for the scheme at planning.

Central to the success of the scheme is the removal of an unsympathetic blockwork and render addition to the front elevation (from the former cinema use). This has given the original facade it’s former prominence, significantly improving the streetscape and contribution the building will make to the conservation area and World Heritage Site.
