Millennium
Re-development of a 1930’s cinema into a mixed use cultural venue & workspaces.
A building that holds fond memories for all those that live in Plymouth, the Millennium has been a theatre, a cinema and various nightclubs throughout its 90 year history.
Nudge Community Builders have partnered with Eat Work Art to kick-start the re-use of this building. The long term vision for the building is to create an exceptional venue for music and other cultural activities, supported by day time uses that contribute to the local economy and community. Nudge Community re-imagine, own, create and run activity in disused, underused or unusual urban spaces to lead to lasting positive change and community led regeneration. Eat Work Art transforms spaces into vibrant creative communities.
In collaboration with Incremental Urbanism we are developing Phase 1 of the buildings re-invention with a scheme to transform the ground floor into flexible workspaces that will target local start up businesses from food and drink through to wellbeing spaces.

SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS
The Millennium building is changing thanks to 491 people who invested £351,250 in community shares.
‘We bought the Millennium building on Union Street in partnership with Eat Work Art in September 2020. Nudge and Eat Work Art take a similar approach to breathing life back into buildings. This building has been standing empty for 15 years.
It holds really special memories for lots of people. Built in 1931 as The Gaumont Palace it’s been a dance hall, roller disco and much loved nightclub.’

Putting Plymouth On The Map For Music And Culture
Our clients aim to create an exceptional venue for music and other cultural activities, supported by day time uses that contribute to the local economy and community.
They have started to test ideas by enabling local bands to film their music videos in the building including The Native. The building has also hosted other uses, events and pop ups including: a boxing gym, student shows and the awakening music event.
‘ We bought the building because it is too important to our community to be standing empty. Taking on a major building on the street was always part of our plan, it’s taken a long time with lots of twists and turns. We are nervous and excited about giving this building a nudge!’
