Vacancy!
We transformed a vacant shop on Cornwall Street, Plymouth, into pop up space for positive change makers - Vacancy Atlas.
The design is inspired by a bold colour palette with clear graphics, taken directly from VA’s branding. With a budget of 30k to kick-start the use of the space, we focused interventions on where they would have the most impact.
The pop up shop creates a ‘window of opportunity on the high street’.

TIRED & LACKING FOCUS
A mid-century shop unit covered in layers of changes and adaptations.
Before Vacancy Atlas took over in Autumn 2021, the shop had been vacant since 2017. Layer upon layer of shop fitting and signage was removed to strip the shop back to it’s original structure.
From there, we set out to design a highly flexible space to accommodate all manner of pop ups.
BRANDING & ARCHITECTURE COMBINED
Window Of Opportunity
We worked with Plymouth based branding experts 51 Studio and Signmaker Nick Halford to fuse architecture, graphic design and signage into one coherent package.
The result, a bold, on brand shop frontage for the pop up shop, that announces the presence of Vacancy Atlas on the High Street and adds the to vibrancy of this independent quarter of Plymouth city centre.
“Vardo did an excellent job on the Phase 1 conversion of 107 Cornwall Street. They really understood what we were going for in terms of design and aesthetic, and managed to work within our budget without compromising on quality.”
